Thursday, May 28 – Shanghai
Today it’s time to say goodbye—to our guide Joey, to our table neighbors from Malaysia, to Eileen from Canada, to Toni and Coco from the Philippines, and last but not least to the entire crew and our ship, the Century Legend.
The ten-day cruise has passed far too quickly. From now on, it’s just the two of us traveling on our own again.
Fortunately, we are able to check into our hotel before noon. Looking out of our window, we can see the Radisson Blu, where we stayed ten years ago. We set off for a walk along the bustling Nanjing Road, but an hour later, I give up. I haven’t been feeling well since yesterday, maybe due to the meal we had the evening before last. So I head back to the hotel while Sigi continues, along Nanjing Road all the way to the Bund.
A few hours later, he returns with five new rescue vehicles for our collection—and at least 500 photos. Shanghai is simply incredibly photogenic! Even old, abandoned hutongs that have likely fallen victim to urban development and will eventually make way for high-rise buildings are brought to life by skillfully painted murals.
For this evening, we have tickets to the “ERA” show at Shanghai Circus World—and once again it is a truly world-class performance. Acrobatics on teeterboards, on ropes, with hoops, with doves (!!), and finally motorcycles racing around inside a steel sphere. Eight motorcycles. EIGHT! At the same time!
Afterwards, we take the bus back to the hotel through the nighttime streets of Shanghai, and at least Sigi managed to cover 16,103 steps or 11.9 kilometers today.
