260518 – Montag, 18.

(No.11 Chao Tian Men Pier).

10 km.

Monday, May 18 – Bye Bye Chongqing – Ahoy, Century Legend –

Today we’re taking it easy — we sleep in, make use of the hotel’s washing machine and dryer, and enjoy a long breakfast. Around noon, we fearless tourists set off despite the light rain and walk to the Luohan Temple. Founded almost 1,000 years ago and repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries, the temple is home to hundreds of Buddhas and Arhats. The architecture is breathtaking, as is the contrast with the surrounding skyscrapers. This is probably the most beautiful temple we’ve seen so far.

Then we happen to wander into a shopping mall where the entire 8th floor consists only of toy stores. What a coincidence… Heavily loaded with numerous ambulances for our collection, we return to the hotel and, of course, have to repack our luggage before setting off again — now with three pieces of baggage.

We realize just how hilly Chongqing really is from the route our taxi driver takes: to avoid downtown traffic, he actually drives through a parking garage — entering on Level 8 and exiting on Level 1 near the riverside road by 朝天门11码头 (No. 11 Chao Tian Men Pier). And this is where our cruise ship, the Century Legend, will depart this evening.

After staying in five different hotels in five different cities over the last two weeks, we’re happy not to have to pack our suitcases again after just two or three days, but instead to spend 10 nights sleeping in the same bed. The 11-days Yangtze River cruise from Chongqing to Shanghai is already our fifth cruise, and we’re very excited.

We settle into our cozy cabin and then head to dinner — and suddenly realize that the ship is moving. We had completely missed the departure without noticing! We quickly rush up to Deck 6, and nighttime Chongqing glides past us — a fantastic sight and a wonderful city that would have deserved a much longer visit.

We attend the usual safety briefing and the presentation of the program for the next days — quite fast and in Chinese, but we have headphones with English translation. Afterwards, the Filipino duo Toni & Coco provides live music until the captain’s welcome party, where there is even more music and dancing.

And with that, we still manage to end up with 15,356 steps — about 10 km.
