260609 – Dienstag, 9.

It‘s a Small World“.

260609 – Tuesday, June 9 – One Last Farewell Tour

Today we head once more to the smallest of all the Disneylands. Over the last two days (and probably nights as well), the Cast Members have removed all the decorations from the 20th Anniversary celebration and replaced them with new ones. On the large plaza behind the train station there is now a giant Pixar lamp, and even the flowerbed just past the entrance has returned to being a Mickey Mouse face instead of Duffy.

The park officially opens at 10:30 a.m. today, at least the main entrance, but access to the individual themed areas only begins at 11:00 a.m. This allows us to experience the so-called “rope drop” and the rush to the mine train in Grizzly Gulch firsthand.

We stroll through Toy Story Land into Fantasyland, walk through the Fantasy Garden, and then watch the 3D movie PhilharMagic. The film we already know has been extended with a sequence from Coco.

We treat ourselves to a coffee on Main Street, politely decline the Avocado Latte (who comes up with such an idea?), and once again wonder why the café is decorated with photos of the Giant Ferris Wheel and other old views of Vienna.

Then we watch the afternoon parade one more time. There are relatively few visitors today, so there is no crowding and we can find a great spot for taking photos. Afterwards, we walk through the castle—where all traces of the 20th Anniversary celebration have also disappeared—to Winnie the Pooh and then to It’s a Small World.

And here, for the first time, we notice quite a number of main characters from Disney films: Bambi and Thumper, for example, or Pinocchio in Italy, Miguel from Coco in Mexico, and Woody and Jessie in the Wild West. Scotland, however, seems rather empty—perhaps Merida will move in there someday?

We take another lap through the world of Frozen, then fly over Fantasyland with Dumbo, ride past the castle on the grand carousel, and spin around in the teacups. To finish off, we ride our favorite attraction here one last time: Mystic Manor. On the way there, we encounter Albert the monkey.

Inside Mystic Manor, there are countless pictures hanging on the walls, and we search for familiar names—Disney Imagineers and other personalities connected with Disney. We manage to find at least one portrait of “Maestro” Danny Elfman.

At 6:00 p.m. it is time to say goodbye. We take the shuttle back to the Hollywood Hotel, collect our luggage, and head to the airport. Swiss Airlines carries us on a 13-hour flight to Zurich. From there, it is only a short hop to Vienna, where we land right on schedule at 8:50 a.m. after five and a half weeks in China and Hong Kong.
