Tag 89 – Mississippi
Elvis Aaron Presley kam in einem kleinen, aus nur 2 Räumen bestehenden Haus in Tupelo, Mississippi, zur Welt, kurz nach seinem leider totgeborenen Zwillingsbruder Jesse Garon. Kein elektrischer Strom im Haus, das WC ein kleiner Schuppen draußen. Am gleichen Grundstück steht heute die Kirche, die Elvis und seine Eltern besuchten – sie wurde 2008 hierher versetzt und bietet ein 15-minütiges, sehr gut gemachtes Rund-um-Video, das den Besucher mitten in eine Gospel-Messe aus den späten 30er / frühen 40erJahren versetzt. Das Museum bietet viele Familienfotos und Hintergrundinformation zu der Zeit, in der Elvis aufwuchs. Elvis und seine Familie lebten hier, bis sie 1948 nach Memphis übersiedelten. Wir waren vor Jahren bereits in Graceland, jetzt haben wir auch den Ort besucht, wo alles begann – und wir haben das Gefühl, Elvis wesentlich näher gekommen zu sein.
State Capitol Nummer 30 auf unserer Reise, in Jackson, Mississippi, beeindruckt uns durch seine Atmosphäre – bunter Marmor, Säulen und Balkone, Stuck und viele Lichter – erinnert uns ein wenig an ein schickes Theater in Wien oder Paris. Wunderschöne Buntglasfenster zieren Abgeordnetenhaus und Senat, und die Rotunde ist ebenfalls ein Hingucker. Außen, ganz oben, thront ein vergoldeter Adler und wacht über das Gebäude.
Wir fahren weiter und finden einen indianischen Grabhügel, daneben ein kleines Gebäude mit Artefakten in Glaskästen sowie Hintergrundinformation. Das Ganze liegt an einem Rastplatz am Highway 49 bei Pocahontas, ist rund um die Uhr geöffnet, sauber und von Security bewacht – klingt gut für uns, wir fragen höflich, und bekommen die Erlaubnis, heute hier zu übernachten. Und die Katzenfamilie hier mit 7 hungrigen Katzenkindern bekommt unser Huhn.
Day 89 – Mississippi
Elvis´ birthplace in Tupelo is a modest, 2 room house, no electricity, the literal outhouse in the back yard. He was born here on January 8th, 1935, shortly after his stillborn twin brother Jesse Garon. In 2008, the original Assembly of God Church, which Elvis and his parents attended, was moved onto the site, offering a nice 15-minute video experience, placing the visitor in the middle of a typical gospel church service of the late 30s / early 40s. The museum provides a lot of family pictures, and back ground information about the time period Elvis was growing up in. He and his family lived here until they moved to Memphis, TN, in 1948. We visited Graceland many years ago, now we have also seen the place where it all began – and we feel way closer to Elvis now.
State capitol # 30 on our journey, in Jackson, MS, is an impressive building. Lots of colorful marble, pillars and columns, balconies and stucco, and many, many light bulbs create an atmosphere which reminds us of the beautiful theatres in Vienna, Austria, or Paris, France. The stained glass windows in House and Senate chambers are beautiful, as is the opulent rotunda. On the top of the dome sits a magnificent golden eagle, watching over the building.
After visiting the capitol, we turn north again and find an Indian burial mound with a small information building on site, containing several artefacts in glass display cases and a lot of information. The place is situated at a rest area on highway 49, near Pocahontas, MS, looks clean and is watched by security 24/7 – sounds good for us, so we ask nicely and get permission to stay at the rest area for tonight. And our chicken goes to the local cat family with 7 hungry kittens.
