Viele von Euch haben uns nach unserer Rückkehr nach den schönsten Plätzen, den abenteuerlichsten Routen und nach den schönsten Erlebnissen gefragt. Und jedes Mal fiel uns die Antwort schwer, weil wir täglich mit –zig Eindrücken konfrontiert waren.
Aber ein Punkt zieht sich wie ein roter Faden über alle zurückgelegten Kilometer, jeden erklommenen Höhenmeter, jedes besuchte Land: die Menschen, die unsere Wege gekreuzt haben! Deshalb gibt es in unserem Blog ein Kapitel „people we met“.
Begonnen hat alles in Calais, Maine, USA, mit Ellen und Paul.
In Kanada war es beinahe unmöglich, die Wassertanks zu füllen – Mitte April war es noch viel zu kalt und alle externen Wasseranschlüsse noch geschlossen. Die Suche nach Frischwasser zum Nachfüllen und einem Plätzchen für die Nacht war nach dem Grenzübertritt von Kanada in die USA auch schwierig. Alle Picknick-Plätze waren noch geschlossen, die Saison eben noch nicht eröffnet. Auch die externen Wasseranschlüsse der Tankstellen waren noch nicht geöffnet, da es einfach noch zu kalt war. Schließlich landeten wir bei einem Walmart, wo wir hofften, in der Gartenabteilung Wasser tanken zu können. Auch dort war der Wasserhahn noch nicht in Betrieb, aber Ellen vom Customer Service rief einfach ihren Mann Paul an, weil sie „wohnen gleich um´s Eck“ – Paul kam und lotste uns die ca. 6 Kilometer zu ihrem Privathaus, wo wir unseren Frischwassertank auffüllen konnten.
Dieses Erlebnis hat uns schon am Anfang der Reise geprägt und so entstand in unserem Blog das Kapitel „People we met“. Auf den restlichen mehr als 80.000 Kilometern begegneten uns noch viele nette und freundliche Menschen aus allen Kulturen und sozialen Schichten. Mit etlichen dieser neuen Freunde und Bekannten sind wir nach wie vor in Kontakt. Ihnen ist dieser Eintrag und auch die beiden Videos gewidmet. Danke – dass ihr Teil unserer Reise wart!
After our return, many people asked us about the most beautiful places we have seen, the most adventurous routes and the most impressive experiences that had happened to us. And there is no correct answer because there were just soooo many things to see and places to visit – every day!
But if we look back on all the thousands of miles we have been driving, on all the thousands of altitude feet we conquered through each and every one of the 19 countries we visited, there is something standing out: it´s the people we had the great fortune to get to know along the road. That´s the reason for the chapter “People we met” in our blog. And everything started with Ellen and Paul in Calais, Maine, USA.
In Canada, it was almost impossible to get fresh water for our tanks – in the middle of April it was still too cold and freezing, all the exterior faucets were still closed. And after crossing into the USA, the search for water and a place to stay overnight wasn´t much easier on the south side of the border. All the picknick sites still closed – it was still off-season – and the faucets at the gas stations also not open yet. Finally, we stopped at a Walmart, hoping to get water for our tank in the garden department. No luck there, either, but: Ellen from Customer Service called her husband Paul because they lived “Just around the corner”. Paul came, guided us the few miles to their house and allowed us to fill our tank.
This was a distinctive moment right at the beginning of our journey and the reason for “People we met”. On the following 50.000 miles, we met many, many nice, friendly, helpful people from different cultures and social environments. And we are still in contact with several of these new friends and acquaintances. This blog entry and also the two videos are dedicated to YOU, guys – THANK you for being a part of our journey!
