Tag 95 – Houston, Texas
Eigentlich wollten wir noch die eine oder andere der schönen, alten Plantagen im Mississippi-Delta besuchen, aber es war schon wieder so affig heiß, um die 40°C mit hoher Luftfeuchtigkeit, und wir haben auch schon genug von Sumpf, Moskitos und Alligatoren. Und die Straßen in Louisiana sind eine Katastrophe. Also ab nach Westen, nach Texas – auch heiß, aber eine trockene Hitze, die wir beide besser vertragen.
Der Besuch in Houston im NASA Space Center hat sich wirklich gelohnt. Das Space Shuttle „Independence“ huckepack auf der Boeing 747 „NASA 905“ nicht nur zu sehen, sondern auch betreten zu können, war etwas Besonderes (auch wenn das Shuttle nur ein Replika ist und nur einige Teile wie zB die Reifen original sind – dafür ist die „905“ original). Gleich daneben findet sich eine SpaceX Rakete. In einem Nebengebäude befindet sich eine komplette Saturn 5-Rakete, zusammengebaut aus bereits fertigen Komponenten für die dann nicht mehr durchgeführten Apollo 18, 19 und 20-Missionen. Auch Nachbauten der ISS Raumstation und von Skylab kann man betreten und von innen besichtigen. Das Artemis-Programm – die nächsten bemannten (und befrauten!) Raumflüge zum Mond – wird erläutert, unzählige Exponate sind zu entdecken, und es gibt sogar ein Stück Mondgestein, das man berühren darf.
Und im Shop finden sich dann – nein, keine Tribbles, sondern eine zerzauste Sonne und entzückende Plüschplaneten, Venus sogar mit langen Wimpern und Kussmund!
Day 95 – Houston, TX
The plan was to visit one or two of the beautiful old plantation homes in the Mississippi-Delta area, but is was unbearably hot with extremely high humidity, and we´ve had our share of marshes and swamps, mosquitoes and alligators. And the roads in Louisiana are in bad shape, by the way. So, westwards, to Texas – also hot, but a dry heat.
The NASA Space Center in Houston is really worth a visit. To see a Space Shuttle piggybacked on a Boeing 747 and to be able to enter it, is fascinating (even though the “Independence” is a replica with only some original parts like the tires; but the “NASA 905” is the original carrier). A few feet away there is an original SpaceX rocket. In another building we find a complete Saturn-5 rocket, ready to fly, made of components for the cancelled missions Apollo 18, 19 and 20. There are also replicas of Skylab and Space Station ISS to enter and to explore. A separate exhibition introduces NASA´s “Artemis” program, which will again bring astronauts to the moon, including the first woman and the first astronaut of color; hundreds of exhibits are to explore, and there is even a piece of lunar rock you can touch.
And in the shop we find – no, no Tribbles, but a flaming sun and cute plush planets, including Venus with long lashes!
