Auch heute ist der Beginn etwas holprig. Wir fahren über 1 Stunde zum Capybara-Café in Tokyo, um dort festzustellen, dass wir eine Reservierung benötigt hätten. Hab ich leider auf der Website nicht gelesen, und es ist alles ausgebucht. Wenigstens ist der Skytree in der Nähe, den wollten wir uns ohnehin anschauen. Am Weg finden wir nicht nur zwei kleine Schreine (wir waren schon lang in keinem Tempel oder Schrein mehr), sondern auch einen Barbershop, Sigi bekommt nach 7 Wochen endlich wieder den Bart gestutzt und ist happy.
Der Skytree ist ein beeindruckendes Bauwerk, von der Aussichtsplattform auf 450 m Höhe kann man an klaren Tagen angeblich bis zum Mt. Fuji sehen. Heute leider nicht, aber wir sehen zumindest den großen Park mit dem Kaiserpalast, den Tokyo Tower und in der Ferne tatsächlich Tokyo Disney Sea – der Tower of Terror und der Vulkan aus Jules Verne‘s „Reise zum Mittelpunkt der Erde“ sind klar zu erkennen.
Von hier geht’s dann mit Metro und Lokalbahn knapp eineinhalb Stunden weiter in den Westen der Stadt (ja, wir sind immer noch in Tokyo — die Stadt selbst hat soviel Einwohner wie ganz Österreich, und die Metropolregion etwa 37 Millionen – eigentlich unvorstellbar) zu den Warner Bros. Studios, und hier haben wir rechtzeitig Tickets für die Studio Tour „The Making of Harry Potter“ gebucht.
Wir waren bereits mehrmals in den Londoner Studios, aber hier ist alles noch ein bisschen größer, die Technik mittlerweile fortgeschrittener, und auch die „Fantastische Tierwesen“- Filme sind vertreten. Und es gibt auch englische Erklärungen, nur das Souvenir Guidebook ist ausschließlich auf Japanisch. Plötzlich sind fast 4 Stunden vorbei, es wird dunkel und eigentlich war die kleine Panne in der Früh mit dem Capybara-Café ein Glück – den Skytree hätten wir jetzt nicht mehr geschafft. Und schließlich waren wir ja in Taiwan mit Capybaras schwimmen.
Wir machen uns auf den Rückweg zu unserem Disneyhotel, wir wollen heute noch Koffer packen – für morgen haben wir zum Abschied noch einen Besuch in Tokyo DisneySea geplant, und am Sonntag früh geht’s dann zurück nach Hause.
Day 50 – Friday, 20 June – Harry Potter in Tokyo
Today also gets off to a bit of a rough start. We spend over an hour traveling to a capybara café in Tokyo, only to find out that we would have needed a reservation. Unfortunately, I didn’t see that on the website, and it’s completely booked out. At least, Skytree Tower is nearby, which we wanted to see anyway. On the way there, we come across not only two small shrines (we haven’t visited a temple or shrine in a while) but also a barbershop — after seven weeks, Sigi finally gets his beard trimmed again and is happy.
The Skytree Tower is an impressive structure. From the observation deck at 450 meters, you’re supposedly able to see all the way to Mt. Fuji on clear days. Sadly, not today — but at least we can see the large park with the Imperial Palace, the Tokyo Tower, and, off in the distance, Tokyo DisneySea — the Tower of Terror and the volcano from Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth are clearly visible.
From there, we take the metro and a local train for about an hour and a half further west across the city (yes, we’re still in Tokyo — the city alone has as many people as all of Austria, and the entire metropolitan area has around 37 million — almost unimaginable) to the Warner Bros. Studios. Here, we actually managed to book tickets in advance for the Making of Harry Potter Studio Tour.
We’ve been to the London studios several times, but here everything is a bit bigger, the technology is even more advanced now, and the Fantastic Beasts films are featured too. And there are English explanations — only the souvenir guidebook is exclusively in Japanese. Suddenly, nearly four hours have flown by, it’s getting dark, and, in hindsight, the little mishap with the capybara café this morning was actually a stroke of luck — we wouldn’t have managed to see the Skytree otherwise. And after all, we did go swimming with capybaras in Taiwan!
We head back to our Disney hotel — we still want to pack our suitcases tonight. Tomorrow, as a farewell, we have planned one more visit to Tokyo DisneySea, and early Sunday morning we’ll be heading back home.
