Day 446 / 422 – The journey to the center of the continent
We actually manage to get up early and go for a short walk on the beach; burrowing owl and black skimmer are out and about, too, and also some pretty Brazilian teals. Then it´s back on the road, due north, it´s getting hotter and hotter, now we are at 93,2° F.
At the gas station we are having a lot of fun with the lovely attendant – she understands that we don´t speak her language, and therefore she just talks louder and even faster, in Portuguese, of course. But somehow, we understand each other – now she knows where we are from, which route we have been driving and how long it took us; she also knows that we are 62 years old, and she congratulates us for looking as good as we do. And we know, that she will be turning 40 this month, and she doesn´t look it, either.
We leave Rota 163, we don´t want to drive to Cuiabá, but more north towards the area of Chapada dos Guimarães. As soon as we leave the main route, there is way less traffic, but the road turns into a roller coaster. And to both sides of the road, in addition to corn, soy and cattle, we see cotton fields and eucalyptus plantations, where nandus are playing hide and seek between the trees.
Finally, we arrive at today´s destination, the mirador “geodesic center of South America”. We have to look that up, but we don´t fully understand it. Allegedly, this is the “navel”, the center of South America, but the city of Cuiabá, some 28 miles west also claims this title. Same as in Ecuador, where we found 2 equators, a historical one and a new one, due to new technology and exact mapping methods. It does not really matter, the view is fantastic and in the southwest, somewhere in the mist, the Pantanal is located. Then we drive a few more miles west to a nice private campsite in the village of Chapada dos Guimarães, cool off in the pool and call it a night.
