Tag 278 – Laguna

Day 278 – Laguna

In the morning, we find out that we are in a really nice place. To our left – the beach; straight ahead – the pier with the view point; to our right – the canal, linking the laguna with the Atlantic. By the way, canal: now we know why Google Maps calculated an hour travel time for a distance of only 15 miles yesterday evening – there is no bridge to cross the canal, just a ferry. We hadn´t noticed that yesterday evening.

Sunshine and blue sky – we take or bicycles for a ride, for the first time since forever, and bike along the pier. And here we see dolphins – they allegedly help fishermen with their work, if we understand the locals correctly. If the dolphins really drive the fish towards the nets on purpose, or if the fish just flee from the hungry dolphins, remains unclear, but it is a nice story anyway. There is a large dolphin sculpture on the beach, and a sort of cemetery, white crosses bearing the names of the animals.

We decide to use the bicycles to visit the historic center of Laguna, the second oldest town of Santa Catharina, with nice colonial buildings and cobblestone paved streets (a challenge with our bicycles). A statue at Praça Garibaldi and the Museo da Anita are reminders of Anita Garibaldi, a local freedom fighter. Inside the Igreja Santo Antônio dos Anjos we find nice paintings on the ceiling, and in the harbor cormorants and herons fight for fish.

Back at our brave camper, we store the bicycles again, and then I have to get into the water. Miles of white, sandy beach, the Atlantic at just the right temperature, and the waves are very powerful. We have traversed South America from the Pacific in Perú to the Atlantic in the South of Brazil now; for the complete north to south crossing, we have to drive some more miles.
