Tag 123 – Villahermosa
Der freundliche Parkwächter von gestern hatte schon recht, ein sicherer Parkplatz für die Nacht war es ja, genau vor Starbucks, aber was er vergessen hat zu erwähnen, war der Club 50 m weiter – unglaublich laute Musik bis 3 Uhr früh! War eine etwas mühsame Nacht.
Als 1958 die Suche nach Öl die Ausgrabungsstätte La Venta im Bundesstaat Tabasco bedrohte, wurden die meisten Skulpturen in einen Park in Villahermosa gebracht. Heute stehen hier im „Museo Parque La Venta“ über 30 steinerne Zeugen der Vergangenheit, teilweise braucht man viel Fantasie, um die in den Erklärungen beschriebenen Figuren auch wirklich zu sehen – manche Stücke erscheinen unfertig, andere stark verwittert. Der Park beherbergt auch einen kleinen Zoo mit heimischen Tieren: Katzen wie Ozelot, Macay Langschwanzkatzen und Jaguar, Weißwedelhirsche und Pecaris, Vögel, Krokodile und Schildkröten. Überall im Gelände turnen Coatis herum, putzige Nasenbären, die sich um die von den Bäumen fallenden Mangos kümmern.
Villahermosa scheint nur aus Baustellen und Umleitungen zu bestehen, der Verkehr staut sich überall. Wir verzichten auf einen Besuch der Innenstadt und fahren lieber nach Süden, zu den Höhlen von Coconá. Das sind recht nette Tropfsteinhöhlen, mit einem kleinen unterirdischen See und einer großen Fledermauskolonie. Leider sind Temperatur und Luftfeuchtigkeit in der Höhle fast genauso schlimm wie draußen; es ist rutschig und unser Guide hat es scheinbar sehr eilig – vielleicht hat er auch bloß keine Geduld mit der „Gringa“, die nur die Hälfte von dem versteht, was er erzählt, und daher ständig nachfragt.
Dann geht es weiter nach Chiapas – morgen wollen wir uns das berühmte Palenque anschauen. An der Lagune von Catazajá parken wir uns für die Nacht ein, es geht ein kühles Lüftchen hier – sehr angenehm. Eigentlich wollten wir noch schwimmen gehen, es gibt hier Manatees, aber auch Krokodile, und zwar laut der netten Dame, vor deren Haus wir parken, ziemlich große – also lassen wir das lieber.
Day 123 – Villahermosa
The friendly guard yesterday was right, it was a safe place for the night, right in front of Starbucks. What he forgot to mention, though, was the club about 150 ft away, with incredibly loud music till 3 a.m. It was not a quiet night!
In 1958, an oil extraction project threatened the archeological site of La Venta in the State of Tabasco, so most of the sculptures were transported to a park in Villahermosa. So today, there are more than 30 of those stone witnesses of the past on display in the “Museo Parque La Venta”; some of them seen unfinished, others decayed – for some of the sculptures you need a lot of fantasy to see the things which are described in the explanations. There is also a small zoo with endemic animals: cats like ocelot, macay long-tail cats and jaguar, white tail deer and pecari, birds, crocodiles and turtles. And there are cute coatis everywhere, taking care of the mangoes falling from the trees.
Villahermosa seems to consist mostly of construction zones and detours, there is traffic jam everywhere. So we cancel the planned visit to the historic center and drive south, to the Coconá Caves. These are nice stalactite caves with a subterranean lake and a large bat colony. Unfortunately, temperature and humidity are as bad inside the caves as outside; it is very slippery, and our guide seems to be in a hurry; or maybe he just has no patience with the “Gringa” who understands only half of what he is saying, and therefore has to ask constantly.
Then we continue to Chiapas – tomorrow we want to see famous Palenque. We find a nice spot for the night at the Laguna of Catazajá, there is a nice cool breeze – very pleasant. We wanted to go for a swim, there are Manatees in the lagune, but also crocodiles, and – according to the nice lady we asked for permission to park – rather large ones – so we skip that.
