Tag 209 – Quito I
Day 209 – Quito I
In the morning, we drive to Austral, the local Iveco-dealer in Quito, but unfortunately, we can get neither spare parts nor tires for our exotic vehicle – Señor Alex and Señora Patricia are trying very hard to help us, but no luck. There might be a place where we could get tires, but it´s closed today, so we´ll try again on Monday.
Then we drive to the Teleférico, park our camper and take a collectivo down the hill and then an Uber into the historic center. At the Plaza San Francisco we find the largest colonial building in Quito – San Francisco church, convent and museum – the interior of the church is absolutely stunning, the view from the bell tower is great and the museum houses priceless paintings, sculptures and religious art. There is even a brewery, where the monks brewed beer, for example German Weissbeer.
Afterwards we visit the Museo del Arte Colonial, inside a beautifully restored building from the 17th century with fantastic paintings, sculptures and original furniture. Right next door there is the next highlight, the Iglesia de la Merced with an ornate altar and intricate stucco on walls and ceiling. Afterwards we stroll through the streets, look into shop windows, and we get lucky and find three new ambulances for our collection.
Finally, we visit the Cathedral at the Grand Plaza, finding a huge nativity scenery inside. We also find the tomb of Mariscal Sucre, who fought at the side of Simón Bolívar; two guards in historic uniforms watch over the tomb. But we don´t find the paintings we were looking for – the last supper with the local touch of cuy asado (grilles guinea pigs), chicha (fermented corn drink) and humitas (boiled and filled corn dough) – pitty, we would have loved to see that!
Día 209 – Quito I
