Day 352 / 328 – Ventisquero colgante, the hanging glacier

There was heavy rain during the night, in the morning it is clouded and foggy. We take our time, hoping that the weather will get better. At the national park´s ranger station, we show our reservation, pay the tickets and have to leave our brave camper here at the parking lot – the ranger thinks the vehicle is too high to drive to the other parking lot at the beginning of the trail. No problem, we´ll walk – but then we meet Ann and Paul from San Francisco, they give us a ride.

We have to cross a hanging bridge to reach the trailhead; the trail is about 2 miles long, the first part a bit steep, the second half is easier. Said the ranger. What he did not say: it is slippery and muddy – of course, because there was a lot of rain – with a lot of tree roots and logs, rocks and boulders. It is raining on and off again in the forest ( rainforest) and the fog and the clouds are still present ( cloud forest). We still hope that we´ll get to see the hanging glacier from the mirador, and march on, through the forest and uphill.

It is really beautiful here, only few tourists (due to the weather, probably), and nature all around. Huge mossy trees, fungi in all shapes and colors, ferns as high as our camper and enormous coltsfoot leaves which could provide shelter for a small family. Every 500 meters there is a sign – at “1.500 m” my watch announces that we have conquered already 2.500 meters – something´s not right here (and it feels more like 2.500 meters, too). Well, we´ll find out when we get there.

And we are in luck – as we arrive at the viewpoint after a bit more than 1,5 hours, we get to see the hanging glacier and the two large waterfalls for some brief minutes before the fog covers the scenery again. We enjoy the view together with the few other hikers, take a short break and then start the trail back. Small chucaos (a robin-like native bird) are scampering around, but the star of the show is the tiny, hungry pygmy forest mouse which doesn´t care about the intruders at all.

We conquered the trail; we are motivated and so we take a turn to the left to the boat pier of Laguna Tempanos. From here, we get to see glacier and waterfalls once more, this time without fog and even with a bit of blue sky. Then we cross the hanging bridge once more and start walking back to the entrance; suddenly, the park ranger vehicle appears – they have 2 spare seats, if we want to join them? Yessss, pleeeeease! Claudio and Carlos give us a ride to the entrance and even present us with some nice stickers from the park.

When we arrive at our brave camper, we are sweaty, hungry and tired, our clothes are wet and muddy. Doesn´t matter, we are happy – today we conquered the complete trail, without giving up our turning around. We drive the few miles to Puerto Puyuhuapi, park the vehicle at the promenade, take a shower, cook, eat – and go to sleep.
