Tag 339 / 315 – El Calafate

Day 339 / 315 – El Calafate

The BIG surprise today: the Toy Museum in El Calafate, an exquisite collection of toys from all around the world, the oldest ones from the 1870s. Our main focus are the ambulance toys, of course, but there is a lot more – wooden and plastic toys from Argentina, tinplate cars and robots from Japan, heavy lead models from England, Pennytoys from Germany and American models, all of them labeled and well presented in large glass showcases. We are familiar with Argentinian trademarks like Gorgo, Rullero or Saxo, and fortunately we have almost all of the ambulances displayed here in our collection.

There are dolls, Disney figurines, Argentinian Lego (Mi Ladrillo), a complete farm with lots of animals, soldier figurines, children´s books, collectible stickers, table football, doll prams and so much more. But the love for collecting antiques obviously included more than just toys: we find the complete inventory of an old general store, cameras, lots of framed cartoons and movie ads on the walls, and there is also a part of the exhibition dedicated to Eva Perón. The museum collection belongs to an Italian who has been living here more than 40 years. We are overwhelmed, and we spend much more time here than planned. We talk to the nice young lady at the reception, explain our collection background and leave our contact information.

Then we stroll down the main street, to the park behind the main administration office of the Los Glaciares National Park; there is a small nature path describing the local flora, and in between we find some important people – Francisco Moreno and Charles Darwin, surrounded by local fauna. Then we visit the Centro de Interpretación Histórica, where we learn something about Megatherium, Milodon and friends. In the last part of this exhibition we notice again, that the human being is the most cruel of all the living things on earth – some details about how the indigenous people who had been living here for millenia were treated by the newly arrived European colonists are hard to digest.

We leave the museum and drive to the shore of Lago Argentino, to the rock paintings at Punta Walichu. The wind has picked up strength during the day, now it is a storm and it is very cold; looking for the few remaining paintings on the rock isn´t much fun. We almost loose the headphones of our audio guides, and then it starts to rain. We cut our visit short and return to the large YPF gas station for one last night.
