Tag 315 – The Post Office and the Train at the End of the World

After breakfast we drive to the Tierra del Fuego National Park. The huge park covers a big part of Argentina´s Fireland, but only a few percent are accessible for visitors. Here, in Puerto Guaraní, we find a tiny post office – allegedly the world´s southernmost and smallest post office (and if there is no post office in the Antarctic, then it´s at least the southernmost). You can send letters and postcards from here, and you can have your passport stamped. That would have been possible at the equator in Ecuador, too – but we didn´t dare then because we didn´t know if this is legit. We still don´t know but today we don´t care – the “end of the world” stamp with the penguin is too cute. And if they offer stamps when we cross the polar circle, we´ll have our passports stamped again.

Then we take a ride with the train at the end of the world – a small gauge train, built by the inmates of the presidio in Ushuaia. Half of the original train tracks have been restored and opened for tourism in 1994. In the year 2000, even Mickey Mouse was here. It´s a nice but short train ride, with souvenir shops and photo stops at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the tour. We get to see the Macarena waterfall – well, water is falling a few yards, so it is a waterfall. Plugging our earphones in, we hear the history of the train, the construction and the inmates who worked here (we remember what we saw and heard yesterday at the presidio), and at the return journey we get information about flora and fauna in the park, available in 8 different languages. The fauna here, by the way, consists of several species introduced by humans, not only beavers. European rabbits were brought to Fireland and – without natural predators – developed into a pest, eating the grass needed for the sheep. To control the rabbit population, foxes from the mainland were introduced – another mistake because they only eat rabbits once in a while – they prefer sheep! Maybe we shouldn´t interfere with mother nature´s plans so much!

There are several nice hikes in the park, and the Ruta 3 also ends here. But we have to save that for another day – it´s afternoon already and we have to pack our bags for tomorrow. We drive back to Ushuaia, catching a glimpse of the airport; our spot at the parking lot at the harbor is still available, and we start preparing our clothes and all the other stuff. Which isn´t easy in our very limited “living room”. And we also have never been on a cruise before, let alone to the Antarctic. We check our list, hoping we didn´t forget anything – our usual “oh well, if we forgot something, we´ll buy it when we´re there” won´t work this time. And while we are stuffing the last items into the bags, our ship arrives at the harbor. Bag drop off is tomorrow morning, boarding in the early afternoon. The Ocean Victory will be our home for the next 11 days.
