Tag 100 – wieder in Texas

Tag 100 – back in Texas

The “devils rope museum” in McLean piqued our interest – we could not imagine a museum about barbed wire. There actually is a barbed wire collectors association, and they made this very interesting museum possible. From the invention and the making of barbed wire to the tools and the machines necessary for fabricating it, everything is on display here. And of course, there is also a part of the museum dedicated to the route 66. So, when you are driving on route 66, this museum is well worth a visit. McLean also has some very nice murals, and a beautifully restored gas station from 1929.

First stop in Amarillo was the „American Quarter horse Museum & Hall of Fame”. This special American breed is perfect for working the cattle herds on the large ranches – fast, maneuverable, with a good instinct for the movement of the cattle. The fastest of these horses can run a quarter of a mile in 21 seconds – and that is the usual distance for horse races here, hence the name Quarter horse.

Then, in “Billy ‘s Backyard Classics“, we didn´t know where to turn first – 2 show rooms full of priceless Oldtimers. Bill Prat was a race driver – Formula Atlantic – and he loved Oldtimers. He owned 179 old automobiles, his wife keeps the museum running since he passed away in 2020, 102 cars are still here – and they all are ready to drive, the museum mechanic makes sure of that.

Talking about cars – when you are in Amarillo, you have to visit the Cadillac Ranch. We saw it on our Route 66 road trip 20 years ago, but it was raining then and we were up to our ankles in mud. Today we had scorching heat. And new for us was also that spray paint is available on site, so you can leave your mark on the cars. Two blocks away, at an RV Park, there is an RV-trailer half-buried, same as the Cadillacs. The “Legs of Amarillo” on the other hand, several miles to the south, were supposed to look like the original in ancient Egypt – unfortunately they also have graffiti all over – that was not the plan.

We decided to stay on a campground tonight for the first time on our travel, in the beautiful Palo Duro Canyon, right next to the Pioneer Stage, where we saw “TEXAS – the Outdoor Musical”. The musical, in its 56th season this year, tells the story about the struggle of the early settlers, Native Americans, farmers and ranchers. A talented cast presents a perfect show, even a donkey and horses are part of the cast. We enjoyed the show very much!
