Wednesday, June 3 – Off to Hong Kong
Today marks the beginning of the final leg of our trip through Asia. We leave Shanghai and fly to Hong Kong. We take the hotel shuttle to the airport and once again experience that in China, no car is ever too small to fit at least two more people with luggage (the same apparently applies to elevators and buses).
At Shanghai Pudong Airport, we spot “Nap Hubs” right in the terminal—funny little sleeping pods. A great idea, although probably not for anyone with claustrophobia. After a calm and pleasant 2.5-hour flight, we arrive in Hong Kong. The sight of the city still fascinates us, and just before landing we even catch a glimpse of Hong Kong Disneyland—the final stop of our journey.
We have now traveled through China for four weeks without any problems, using trains, buses, and subways, and without ever needing cash. At Hong Kong Airport, however, we discover that Alipay and WeChat Pay are not available to us here—they can only be used by people with a phone number from China, Hong Kong, or Macau. On the other hand, physical credit cards are accepted here, something that has become quite rare in mainland China. Eventually, we manage to find a taxi after all.
The drive takes over an hour. Ada’s house is located in the Northern District, near the border with mainland China at Futian. Along the way, we see a great deal of construction activity, with many new residential towers being built. At last, we arrive. Ada and Liman are already waiting for us, and for dinner Leo and Cleo join us, along with Ada’s sister Cathy. Everyone is delighted to see each other again, and there is plenty to talk about.
