Saturday, June 15th – City Hall, Harbor Museum and Harry Potter
It´s raining – ideal for a visit to Hamburg’s beautiful City Hall, where we get to see the senate and several board chambers, including original cow hide wallpaper (!!) with silver threads, depicting bitter oranges – a symbol for the wealth of the city which could afford such exotic fruits. Afterwards, over a coffee at Starbucks, we try decide where to next. The weather is getting better, so we could visit the harbor museum. Along the way, we find a model car shop – we buy three new additions for our ambulance collection and the nice owner mentions an old-timer meeting with a model car swap meet on Sunday, at an open air museum south of Hamburg – that´s a maybe for tomorrow.
The Harbor Museum is busy, there are many visitor in the main building, the warehouse 50A, as well as in the outside area with the beautiful 4-master „Peking“, the old harbor locomotive and some wagons and several old loading cranes. And then there is the „MS Bleichen“, the last fully functioning general cargo ship of its kind, at least in Germany, possibly worldwide. It´s open house … uh, open ship today, so we have the opportunity to join a very interesting and funny guided tour through the old ship.
Afterwards, we head back to the hotel and change for the magical world of „Harry Potter and the cursed child“. But, we could have saved the effort – apart from the two of us there are only a couple of other properly dressed witches and wizards, we see some Hogwarts and house scarves, but that´s it – all the others are just Muggles. No problem, the real magic is happening on the stage, and the performance was as fantastic in German as it was in English in London and New York.
