Day 422 / 398 – No money, no sugar or: 3x Mercedes with 1 Iveco
The campground Reserva Natural Biprovencial Mocoretá at the river was a good choice – pure nature, quiet and free. Of course, Señor José who lives here and takes care of the place, gets a little “thank you” before we leave. After breakfast we walk along the river, watching Picazuro pigeons in the trees and two pairs of southern lapwings having a very loud discussion.
Then we start driving north, direction Esteros de Iberá, a huge nature reserve with lots of swamps and marshes. We don´t want to drive the main route from the south, almost 45 miles of rather bad dirt road, we prefer one of the alternatives from the northwest. So, we follow ruta 14 and then ruta 199 north till Mercedes.
There is no gas station on the outskirts of Mercedes which is rather unusual – we have to drive into the town. After filling up on diesel we are on our way back to the main route but we need bread, sugar, and some other groceries. We stop at a supermercado along the way where we get almost everything we need – except sugar. A few blocks back in town there is another store – but they also don´t have any sugar. Strange. The employee mumbles something about a “truck which has not arrived yet”. Well, we have enough sugar for a day or two.
We leave Mercedes direction northwest, stop for coffee on the way and look at the map – which way to go to Iberá and what would we like to do there – maybe a boat tour? For that we´d need money, and we are short on cash. The nearest Western Union shop is in Mercedes – so it is back to town for the third time. And there we need a lot of patience. They have enough cash available but the Western Union system is having technical issues and the app doesn’t work. We think about staying at the municipal campsite and coming back tomorrow morning, hoping that it will work then, but: we can´t withdraw cash in the morning, only in the afternoon when enough customers have paid their bills, usually past 5 pm. We have no intention of staying in Mercedes till tomorrow afternoon, so we wait and hope. It is already dark when the nice Western union employee knocks on our door, telling us that the technical issues have been resolved. Now the app works, I can get the cash and we hurry to the campground. On the way we see some deer and at the campground a fox is waiting. OK, maybe it is not so bad in Mercedes after all.
