Tag 155 – Somoto Canyon

Day 155 – Somoto Canyon

What an adventure! Fausto has life vests for us, explains the tour and then we start walking – over meadows and through wooded areas along the river bank. We get to see turquois-browed Motmots (Guardabarranca, the Nicaraguan national bird), Oreoles, Kingfisher and also a lot of huge Morphos, the beautiful blue butterflies. After about an hour we reach a boot and get transported further upstream, then we continue on foot over rocky terrain. And then we have to stop – further upstream in the Canyon there are vortices, too dangerous for canyoning. So, we get into the water and just float. An unforgettable experience – steep canyon walls, trees and bushes, peace and silence, only the sounds of the birds and the water.

In the afternoon, we visit the Iglesia del Apostol Santiago in Somoto, Nicaragua´s oldest church with a black Christ on the Cross and a baptismal font from the middle of the 17th century. Then we make it just before nightfall to Estelí; very tired, we try to find a place for the night which proves to be difficult – the first attempt leads us to a construction site where we can´t stay; two gas stations are right at the main street, very noise and not enough room for us. Finally, we find refuge at the local Red Cross Station – it really is a worldwide big family!
