Day 67 โ Nashville & Lynchburg, TN: Nashville has a lot to offer โ we have already been to the country Music Hall of Fame, the Grand Old Opry, the Willie Nelson Museum during previous visits. So we decide to see the Parthenon and the State Capitol. The Parthenon, originally only planned as temporary construction for Tennesseeยดs Centenary in 1897, is supposed to be an exact copy of the original in Athens, Greece, complete with the frieze on the outside and the 42ft golden Pallas Athena inside. The goddess doesnยดt look very Greek to us, but a bit Asiatic โ Iยดll have to ask my Greek colleague at home for his opinion.
Tennesseeยดs State Capitol sits on the highest elevation in the city, surrounded by a park, some construction work and no available parking lots. After asking very politely they let us park on a reserved lot because we donยดt fit into a parking structure. The building itself was bult in Greek revival style, made completely of stone, does not have a rotunda but a tower, and some other distinctive features: two of the architects are buried within its walls, President Andrew Jackson and his wife a buried on the grounds; in the House there are 16 columns, each one made of one single stone, because Tennessee was the 16th state to join the Union.
After the Capitol tour we donยดt have much time to get to Lynchburg, to visit the Jack Daniels Distillery. Sigi is driving, I book the tours online but somehow I goof with the time so we get confirmation for two different tours on two different time slots. An email later the problem is solved and I can join Sigi on the same tour โ THANK YOU, guys! We had a fantastic guide (unfortunately we forgot his name), he gave us a great tour including the well and the fire engines, he made the story of Jack Daniel come to life. Mr. Daniel had learned how to distill whiskey from Nathan โNearestโ Green, a black slave; when Daniel founded the distillery, he asked the then already free Nearest Green to come work for him and him his first Master Distiller โ Americas first black Master Distiller. Later Daniel passed his knowledge on to George Green, the son of Nearest Green, and to this day there are still members of the Green family working at the Distillery. Every single Jack Daniels Whiskey bottle whoch is sold somewhere in the world is produced and bottled here. The tour ended with a whiskey tasting โฆ no, the county is a dry county โฆ it ended with an educational sampling, with a lot of explanations. Still, whiskey is not my drink … but if they could somehow take the alcohol out of Jack Daniel Honey Whiskey, I might think it over โฆ
After the tour we wanted to go for dinner in Historic Lynchburg (which actually consists of one parking lot with a lot of shops on all sides), home of the โWhiskeyburgerโ, but everything was closed, so we continued direction Chattanooga, TN.
