260529 – Freitag, 29.5. – Disneyland Shanghai  –

Friday, May 29 – Shanghai Disneyland

We have been on the road (and river) for the last three and a half weeks: we have seen incredible cultural treasures, fantastic landscapes, sensational museums and wonderful temples. Enough of that for now, we’re all templed out, so to speak- now it’s time for some fun. This morning after breakfast, we move from downtown Shanghai to a nice little hotel (more of a motel, really, with a pool in the courtyard) about 30 km to the south. The location is very convenient, situated between the airport and several attractions—most importantly, Shanghai Disneyland.

Ten years ago, we were here for the grand opening of Shanghai Disneyland on June 16, 2016. Now we have returned for its tenth anniversary. We don’t remember every detail, but one of the biggest differences compared to all other Disneyland parks is immediately noticeable at the entrance: there is a train station, but no train —Shanghai Disneyland does not have a Disneyland Railroad.

Instead, the local Pirates of the Caribbean boat ride is one of our favorite attractions. Thanks to spectacular projections, it feels as though you are deep on the ocean floor, witnessing the battle for a sunken treasure firsthand. Another highlight is the boat ride through the Crystal Grotto beneath the castle—an attraction found only in Shanghai.

The Roaring Rapids come as a bit of a surprise. We remember it as a gentle canoe ride, similar to the former Splash Mountain, and are wondering why everyone else is buying rain ponchos at the entrance. As it turns out, it is a white-water rafting adventure in large circular rafts. It was fun anyway and we didn’t even get wet, but we have to witness all the other people taking off the newly bought rain ponchos and throwing them away. What a waste!

Soaring also features a unique introduction that sets it apart from versions in other Disney parks. The Zootopia area, which includes a very enjoyable ride, is new, and in the evening the colorful scenery is especially impressive.

Today, we only catch glimpses of the parades while passing by—extremely loud, very crowded, and after all, we still have a second Disneyland day on the agenda. Instead, we watch the evening spectacular, Illuminate the Sky. Here, the castle takes center stage, enhanced by sensational projection technology and fireworks in the background. Afterwards, we ride the free shuttle bus back to our hotel; today, we covered 17,697 steps, or 12.9 kilometers.
