260504/05 – Montag, 4.Mai / Dienstag, 5.

Monday, May 4 / Tuesday, May 5 – Off to China

Last year in early summer, we spent five weeks traveling through Southeast Asia — Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan. The trip had started in Hong Kong, and we had to promise our friends there that we would come back this year. And so, once again, it will be five weeks — this time beginning in China.

After months of careful planning, departure day has finally arrived. Today we set off with Austrian Airlines to Munich and then continue with Lufthansa to Beijing. While boarding the plane, we show our “Doc on Board” IDs as always — and once again, during the flight, we are called to assist because of a medical emergency. As a result, the night is rather short, and we arrive in Beijing somewhat sleep-deprived.

Immigration goes smoothly; after all, we already have our double-entry visa and completed the online entry form in advance. Finding the vehicle for the transfer to Chaoyang railway station turns out to be slightly chaotic, and once there, we discover that our booked train to Chengde is delayed by one and a half hours. We manage to rebook ourselves onto the next available high-speed train. Ticket inspection and platform access are handled via passport and Face ID, and then uniformed staff with megaphones expertly organize everyone boarding on the platform — quite an experience. It all works like clockwork, even though people here speak about as much English as we speak Chinese — namely, none at all.

The train covers the 250 kilometers to Chengde in just 45 minutes, and after checking into the hotel, we take a little time to explore the surroundings. Dinner is at a small noodle restaurant, and after that, we call it a day — we’ve been traveling for more than 30 hours, and tomorrow’s schedule is packed.
